Gas! Ugh. Yes I am talking about it!

Soooo…gas. Yes, the smelly kind that your body produces. Why?! Can’t there be a pill invented solely for eradicating this vile aspect of being human…? Granted sometimes gas doesn’t smell noxious at all. And you know what? Farting is the body’s way of releasing internal gas, just like breathing or burping. It’s just that gas always seems to come at the least appropriate time and often when a bathroom is unavailable.

Rather than spend any more time ranting on the subject, I’d like to share some tips on how to best help your body create less foul smelling moments of gas-i-ness:

Check if you’re lactose intolerant, and if so, perhaps you are just cow intolerant therefore still able to eat goat and sheep products. NB: all three contain lactose, which is a sugar found in milk.

Have a small serving of kimchi, sauerkraut will work too, 30 minutes before a meal.

Be aware of food combining. Are you someone who likes to eat a hamburger with a chocolate shake? Yeah, no. Imagine what your poor stomach is receiving: a big mashup of animal meat, dairy, sugar, chocolate or vanilla powder, ketchup - get the picture? Ick. First have the burger, preferably with no beverage - this aids digestion - and then after at least 20 minutes you can

have the shake which is called dessert -hello!

Try to eat more slowly. Chew your food - this is something I still have to be aware of. We mostly rush through meals and don’t chew our food thoroughly enough in order for the body to properlydigest everything.

Our stomachs were not built to constantly be distended. Check your food portions against your actual hunger. Pause before ingesting and take a few deep breaths in order to avoid shoveling food in. Be grateful for the meal in front of you and savor every bite. You’ve heard the phrase “nervous stomach”. Stress can play a role in how gassy you are. Try meditating to quell anxiety. As I’ve written about before, Transcendental Meditation is my method of choice.
