If you enjoy art of all kinds and especially fashion, you must go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. For those visiting or living in New York City, the exhibit will reopen after renovations in May 2014. You’ll be knocked off your feet by the sheer talent of fashion designers including House of Balenciaga, House of Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Rei Kawakubo, and Yves Saint Laurent. Their creations are remarkable testaments to the human imagination. To see so many stellar designs from a wide a range of designers in their pure graphic form, sans the benefit or distraction of the human body is breathtaking.

At last, fashion design is recognized for what it has always been, and that is an art form.

Whether it’s intended to be set off by a frame and hung on a wall (paintings), or realized as three-dimensional objects (sculpture and architecture), or constructed mainly on the plane of ideas (conceptual art), or intended to set-off and enhance the human body (fashion design, body painting and tattooing) this is art in its essence.
