New York Fashion Week 2014

“If the clothes could talk, they’d have incredible stories to tell,” said fashion designer Maria Cornejo.

I remember the first fashion show I did as a teen. It was for a fur line designed by Karl Lagerfeld. I think I fell in love with Mr. Lagerfeld and his designs then. Imagine it, I was 15-years-old, glammed up in hair and makeup, wearing luxury furs that I got paid to walk down a runway in. Photographers snapped my photo, and I was told that I was gorgeous. Such fun! Not to mention that one of the most important fashion designers of the 20th (and 21st) century decided that I should be in his line walking down the catwalk. I felt like a princess…

That was the beginning of a career-long relationship with the super gifted Karl Lagerfeld. A man I greatly admire and have had the privilege to work with on many occasions since that fur show years ago. I reminisced about the experience as I watched the Fall/Winter 2014 presentation by Zero + Maria Cornejo. It was held at a wonderful large industrial size loft space on West 34th Street. All the models were so young and innocent looking, just as I had been when I started. They were dressed up in phenomenal designs, made from the most sumptuous, and plush material. It was a feast for the eyes!

The makeup, which was done by Dick Page for Shiseido, was gorgeous, as was the excellent hair styling by Jordan M for Bumble and Bumble. I also loved the soundtrack by Rodrigo Cornejo that played throughout the show. It was a hauntingly beautiful track that carried the show along. The clothes were stunning. I wanted all of them! I particularly liked the Elie dress in Silk Crepe, as well as the Isie dress in Organza Paillette Print.

New York Fashion Week or NYFW ends this Thursday, February 13th, and then the fashion caravan moves on to London, then Milan, and eventually to Paris. Fashion shows are a wonderful experience to behold from the front row, as well as from the runway. Whether watching or walking them, I love the theatrics of this particular art form, and I’m happy to be a part of the delightful fashion community.
