What Puts a Spring in Your Step?

Today I had a commercial audition for a skincare line that required me to say a lot of copy into the camera. Some of this text had phrases that are not in our everyday vernacular such as: “cellular rejuvenate miracle sleeping cream”, cause really, who says that everyday?! Instead of going on autopilot and barreling my way through these innocuous sentences I decided to treat these words and thoughts as if I’d never gone on a commercial audition before.

I know, what a concept!

The truth is I had more fun in that casting studio than I have had in a long time. Why? Because I was in the present, having a good time without any thoughts of past or future worries.

Yes we have all heard this before. So many times in fact that it makes you want to gag. I know I know. But by focusing on just the task at hand we can free ourselves of all the senseless “stinking thinking” that invades our minds and removes us from the present, and we can potentially have a rewarding experience instead. I was freed in the moment because I was “in the moment,” which allowed me to enjoy the words that I was saying and made the whole experience pleasurable. In my business that is the key. The camera loves an open and alive person more than anything. It’s the most important trait a performer can have.

I left the audition and headed out to a business lunch feeling great. I had a spring in my step as I hailed a taxi heading downtown. It always amazes me that when I am truly present to whatever circumstance I’m in at any given moment, life becomes truly electric. We experience a positive shift in our cellular makeup from these experiences. Allowing ourselves to give and receive from a grounded sense of ourselves in the moment can really turn the day around. It certainly did for me this morning, regardless of whether I get the job or not.

When was the last time you had such an experience? I’d love to hear about it.
